I Looked in the Mirror…. By:  Carrie Keiser I was sitting here trying to come up with a story prompt for this week and the words of a song (She’s Like the Wind-Patrick Swayze) came to mind:  “I look in the mirror and all I see is a young old man with only a dream…”. I knew I had the prompt. So then I spent the rest of the week thinking about what I see when I look in the mirror.  Who do I see? Do I like the person reflected back? Is the person I see, the person I want to be? How is what is reflected portraying me? What or who do others see when they look at me?  In my jobs, I meet a lot of people and these questions run through my mind on occasion, I wonder how they see me and if it is at all similar to how I see me?  Do they see past the smile or the frown?  Do they just see the outside of me or have I let the Light of Christ shine through at moments? Do they see the tiredness or have I presented them with my best and they could never guess I got up extra early against my nature and

The Trunk By: Carrie Keiser The old trunk had been in the corner of her grandmother’s front room for as long as she could remember. Last week, she watched as her parents loaded it up after Gramms had passed away. It now resided in the upstairs bedroom of their house.  Janie sat there staring at the big old thing, she had often looked at it and dreamed of the places it might have gone.  She asked Gramms about if a few times and she hadn’t been very forthcoming. Gramms said that it had been her great-grandmother’s and that it had made the trip across the ocean when her their family had left the old country.  She never opened it but had always wanted to know what was in it and if it could talk what stories would it tell her?  Her mom said it would make a great end table for the guest room and she could store blankets in it. That sounded like a boring story for such a cool trunk to tell.   Janie leaned back and closed her eyes, she pretended she was her 4th great-grandma, Aveline, and sh

Adjective challenge   A Visitor to the Badlands of Montana By: Carrie Keiser Standing on the edge of this cliff, staring out at the incomprehensible work of God’s hands, he feels his minuscule insignificance in the great scheme of life.  They call this the badlands and he understands why, they appear to hide the mysterious and the unpredictability of the forces of nature.  Why would anyone choose to live in this area?  It doesn’t look inviting and feels quite dry. Oh there is a river not far, but those first-comers to this area didn’t have nice air conditioned vehicles and easy ways to extract and clean the river water.  They would have had to travel in the stinkiest fashions: on foot, wagon or horseback to get to the Yellowstone River and cleaning it for drinking, well that wouldn’t have happened.  He counts his blessings, turns away from the amazing view and climbs back into his three-quarter ton silver Dodge, enjoying one of those modern conveniences. Slowly, he heads a mater

Summer Memories By: Carrie Keiser The summerI remember best? Well I have a couple of them them and they both revolve around trucking with dad. The summer of 1984 we (Ryanne, Clancy, Megan, mom, dad and I) crammed into the Green cabover Kenworth with no A/C and set off on an adventure with Mom and Dad. Ya see dad was getting a load that would take us close to some church history sites and mom thought it would be something that we  should see and experience.  I remember Clancy and Ryanne were spending the night at the Jones and we had to call and have them come back home so we could get up early and leave.  I remember it being warm in the truck, but since we didn’t have air conditioning at home not really that bad. The space isn’t ideal for 6 people but we got creative with our sleeping arrangements. One night we stayed at a really big rest area and we chased fireflies and slept on the load.  Other nights we slept in various places: some in the sleeper, some in the seats and on the dog
