Once A Man Now A Demon

Jeorge Marxson stared into the mirror-like surface of the lake, remembering how it happened that he ended up here and in this situation. It wasn’t his plan to become an agent of the devil.

He started out a good man, loved his family, worked hard to provide for them. But, eventually, his choices led him to this lake of fire and brimstone. It was hot as Hades here, too bad the flaming blue-haired man from the Disney movie, Hercules, wasn’t the guy actually in charge, he could use a little comic relief about now.

In his mind’s eye, he re-lived the day he went from decent man to meeting the crossroads demon and striking the deal that would land him here. He had had good intentions, I suppose most people do. He wanted to spend more time with his wife and family but the illness he’d contracted was not going away and no one seemed to have answers. He’d bumped into a dude in the cafe one evening after work who told him for a small fee, he knew a guy who could help him. Jeorge knew better than to fall for something that sounded too good to be true, but desperation often causes a man to make unwise decisions.

Jeorge went with the man to a crossroads just outside of town. The man asked him for a strand of hair and a photo of his family. He placed these items in a small metal box he was carrying in his jacket pocket. Jeorge was instructed to dig a small hole in the center where the roads met and bury the box.

After several minutes, a man, no a demon, appeared and presented the deal. At the time, it sounded like a fantastic plan, he would be guaranteed a full healthy life for the next 10 years with his family and friends. After the 10 years were up he would spend time in servitude with the demons making deals with other desperate humans. That didn’t sound that bad and he was sure that he’d find a loophole somehow in his years with the family.

Jeorge let out a rough, sad laugh. If only he had known what that really added up to. How he would feel about leaving his family. Just exactly what was meant by: 'in servitude with the demons’. He was positive that he couldn’t do what he’d agreed to. How, precisely, was he going to be able to successfully make terrible deals with venturesome, frenzied, foolhardy people?

Somewhere in the world he’d been tethered to a crossroads and eventually he’d be called to return the favor. Jeorge put his head down into his hands that rested on his legs.  If he could have cried, he would have. Shaking his head he tried to reason out how he could avoid that call.

It was too late though, he started to feel the pull of that charge in the center of his being. Resist as he tried, it was of no use, he was towed toward his first fateful meeting to make that introductory deal with some poor sucker.

Once a Man Now a Demon

Myles MacIntosh was a mild, charismatic and caring man. Everyone was amazed by all the ways he connected with all around him. They knew that if they ever needed help, Myles would come.
He has married his high school sweetheart. Their marriage seemed perfect in every way. They had 3 beautiful children, 2 boys and a girl. His wife, Madelyn, agreed with the names he gave the boys, Mark, the oldest and Anthony, then next. But when it came to the daughter and Myles wanted to name her, Molly Jean, she said, "No, her name is to be Maria Angelina." This was the first time that Madelyn had differed with him.
Slowly, Myles began to change. The light of kindness was fading. People would call him and he would make excuses why he was unavailable to respond. His personality changed. He began avoiding his former friends and neighbors.
He, who had never partaken of alcohol, started sopping at the nearest bar on his way home. He would come home drunk and demanding. He began complaining that the house was a mess and turning his nose up at what she had prepared for dinner. He yelled at his sons, calling them stupid and useless. He never criticized Angelina. He seemed afraid of her.
As time went on, he became physically and mentally abusive. Madelyn knew that somehow he had been overtaken by the dark side. She prayed for him, that the demons directing him would be banished. She called the elders to come and bless him. He would consent and inside he was laughing at them. The unholy influence of the devils had the upper hand. His demonizing was almost complete.
There was only one more thing that the evil voices inside his head were directing him to do. He must kill his daughter. Each night he would go to the door of her room, stand there and not be able to enter. The demonic forces finally overcame his hesitancy. He walked in, picked up a pillow and was hovering over her. Suddenly, a circle of intense light surrounded her bed and body. The strength of it propelled him back into the wall. He ran as fast as he could from the room. But the demon he had become drove him back into it. Again, he approached the bed, this time with his hands read to strangle his beautiful Angelina. Just as his hands drew near, the same light enveloped her body and his hands. He could not draw them away from it. In fact, he could not move at all. Angelina awakened and saw her father pinned there unable to get away.
She looked at him and smiled, saying, "Daddy, what is wrong? Why are you standing with your hands all curled?" They, then heard a voice saying, "Myles ask ME and the demons will be removed from thy soul. You will become as you used to be. All you need to do is repent and plead for forgiveness. Your peaceful, loving true self will be restored."
The Demonds were not yet through with Myles. The voice was not through either. Finally, the inner voice won, Myles fell to his knees and started praying. Madelyn came into the room, saw him, knelt beside and added her prayers. Angelina stood behind them, with her heavenly light shining over them. Soon, her brothers joined in.
As the weeks passed by, Myles was gaining his life back. It took time and steadfast praying, and with his friends and family offering their prayers, he was winning. The evil influence was vanished. It had lost its hold over him.
He dedicated his life to repairing the damage that his trip into the dark side had done. People, once again were calling for his counseling and help.
Since he had been a victim of the devil, he was able to steer others back not the light. He never wanted anyone to be possessed as he had been. He was guided by his faith and listened to the still small voice. He was given direction on how to shield those who came to his door in desperation.

ONCE A MAN NOW A DEMON

Story Slingers Prompt

By: Daren't Flynn

This is the story of Orvil Mann. Orvil was an only child of Oleg and Sibyl Mann. Oleg taught English as a second language at the local Community College. Sibyl was the librarian at the local branch of the regional library.
From his birth, Orvil was taken to the library five days a week by his mother. For eight hours a day Orvil was exposed to books. In fact books were his only toys. Left alone with the children's books provided by his mother, Orvil soon was able to relate the printed words to the illustrations and thus, learned at a very early age to read.
Orvil soon found that, with a little imagination, he could insert himself into the story he was reading and live the life of his chosen character. This came as an exciting revelation to young Orvil. From time to time, he would make small changes to the narrative rather follow the written word exactly which made it more fun and matched his personality. Those minor adjustments to the story lines gave the youngster a feeling of accomplishment and seemed to give him a purpose. Then, going back and rereading the book he had just lived, he discovered that the printed narrative had been altered to match the thoughts and actions he has experienced while "living" the story.
There was no end to the possibilities for Orvil. There were more books than he could possibly read and live right there in "his library. So his life was much like that of Walter Mitty. All he has to do was choose a book that would take him to his desired destination and choose his charater and like magic his dreams would come true.
So, this was the life of Orvil Mann throughout his childhood, his youth, and into manhood. He was known by all as "Orvil the bookworm." No-one knew of his unique ability, for he never told anyone. Not even his mother or father.
When he became a man, Orvil's interests and thought processes changed, and not necessarily for the better. Things that were fun for the child and youth no longer provided enjoyment for the man he had become. Pride, greed and self indulgence began to take hold of Orvil. His choice of books was no longer the fantasies and adventures of his youth, but leaned to the weird and decadent. In short, he thought of those activities he had enjoyed as a youth as childish and he wanted to put away childish things.
At this same time in his life, Orvil became aware of another ability had not anticipated. He could now change not only the printed narrative of the book into which he had infiltrated, but every copy of that book wherever it was located.
Pride, greed and wickedness seized him then as he worked out just how he could employ his new found ability to his advantage.
His devious mind worked out just what to to to gain world wide fame and fortune for "the greatest author of all time" as he envisioned himself.
He began to read all the best selling books, making subtle changes and one big change that would provide him with more money than he could ever spend. That change made him the author of all those books which diverted the royalties to Orvil Mann..... or is it Evil Man?
