Something I’m Thankful For

I’m thankful for the family I grew up in.  We have a little different dynamics than your average 3.13 family size (who ever heard of a .13 kid anyway?). With 8 children spreading over 22 years, we have never all lived in the same house at the same time. Such an age span has also created an interesting circumstance, giving us the unique opportunity to get to know siblings either older or younger in a different light than those who grew up in the same home for years.  In some ways I think think this is very cool and in other ways quite the challenge. For some there has been a bit of hero worship and wanting to do or be like an older sibling, fading to understanding or maybe confusion as to why they made certain choices. I’ve always said that I don’t really know this or that sibling because of them not having spent much time around me or me around them however you want to look at it. As I’ve grown, I’ve had the chance to become really good friends with some siblings and others I still don’t really know. We have the same parents and all but the age and distance have not afforded us that opportunity to develop that friendship. Even with all this I would not change any of them.  They are my family forever.

Dec 10, 2023 -- "There should have been a time and a place, but this wasn't it."

There should have been a time and a place, but this wasn’t it. 10 December 2024 by Cary Holmquist  Looking outside just now, I saw a small group of rock doves perched high in a leafless blackleaf cottonwood tree across from our kitchen window.  They have been up there for some hours, waiting out the snow flurries that have been coming and going most of the day.   Somehow, the marauding hawks and owls have not found these hapless creatures—which were almost sitting ducks, as it were, for winged predators.  If a hawk showed up, the doves would scatter to roosts that might be more safe, like the nearby spruce trees that people seem to like to plant in their yards.  If they were sheltering under the thick bristles of spruce branches, the doves would be less visible and accessible.  So, the sight of these bedraggled birds there in the vulnerable cottonwood branches makes me consider that at least the doves are not perched over someone’s vehic...

 What Lurks Behind the Cloud Flynn Family Story Slingers 11 February 2024 by Cary Holmquist Where I grew up was under the Big Sky Country, the East Side of the Continental Divide, where the Rocky Mountain Front to the west was more than 30 miles distant.  The Land of the Shining Mountains, as several native tribes called it, named for the bright Sun’s light reflecting off the snow or bare rock, depending on the season.  Those mountain peaks and jagged outlines blaze out until the shadows of evening crept over them like a dark blanket. To the south were the tall ancient volcanic lakes called Square Butte and Crown Butte, and the lower buttes called Floweree and Shaw Buttes.  And behind them the dark peaks of the volcanic Adell Mountains and eastward the Little Belt Mountains and farther east the huddled peaks of the Highwood Mountains.
