I secured the lock on the French doors and drew the drapes closed, then hesitated a moment before sinking into the rocking chair. Eyes closed, brain brimming with emotions; I struggled to focus on the incidents of the last fortnight. Images of people and places I scarcely recognized projected onto my consciousness. What a whirlwind! 


Cookies…it’s been a long time. I’ll make cookies. “Focus!”


Yes, the first day was frigid, misty and gloomy.


A mug brimming with hot cocoa and cookies will fix that! “Focus!,”


Who were all those costumed people and why did they prance through the brume?


Cocoa, cookies and another log on the fire will secure a warm hearth. “FOCUS!”


Brilliant sunlight in an azure sky. Translucent figures hovering, gliding, floating over a silty estuary—bearing to the sea?


Cookies, cocoa, firelight projecting calidity…almost there. Focus…focus.


The view from the cathedra: random splotches of color: fences, forests, foundations, fruit, fans, flames….


Flames? Firelight! calidity, cookies, cocoa…still need something…illustration…draw. Draw and focus, focus….focus…..zzzzzzz🥱😴


Focus pretty absurd day. It’s your Internet mom where are you going?

My mind draws a blank and I lose focus when I contemplate writing a story that includes using brim as a verb and I’m unsure I can secure and project an acceptable offering. So what we have is a sentence or two hahah!

Dec 10, 2023 -- "There should have been a time and a place, but this wasn't it."

There should have been a time and a place, but this wasn’t it. 10 December 2024 by Cary Holmquist  Looking outside just now, I saw a small group of rock doves perched high in a leafless blackleaf cottonwood tree across from our kitchen window.  They have been up there for some hours, waiting out the snow flurries that have been coming and going most of the day.   Somehow, the marauding hawks and owls have not found these hapless creatures—which were almost sitting ducks, as it were, for winged predators.  If a hawk showed up, the doves would scatter to roosts that might be more safe, like the nearby spruce trees that people seem to like to plant in their yards.  If they were sheltering under the thick bristles of spruce branches, the doves would be less visible and accessible.  So, the sight of these bedraggled birds there in the vulnerable cottonwood branches makes me consider that at least the doves are not perched over someone’s vehic...

Mom's Story from back in the day

 I Was A Welcome Addition Myrna Booher Ever since my mother could remember she had wanted a girl.After the third boy she was about ready to give up. Then on March 3, 1939 in St. Joseph's Hospital, Chewelah, Washington she finally got her girl. She could scarcely believe it! The doctor has said it might be another boy. I didn't open my eyes until three days after my birth. Mom was afraid they weren't ever going to open. Of course I was a little young to know but they tell me I weighed six pounds seven ounces. I started walking around chairs or holding on to someones hand when I was six or seven months old and alone at nine months. As soon I was old enough to know where the food came I showed my appreciation by picking up a milk canard rubbing my stomach. (my uncle was always trying to get a picture of me doing that but I wasn't very co-operative.) This I Remember When I was three or was it four, this little girl would come to visit me.
